I want you to be angry with me! (Black-on-white crime)

"You're Hysterical"

Just this past week, in Columbia, SC an 18-year-old white boy named Carter Strange was savagely beaten by a gang consisting of 8 black boys. You heard right, EIGHT!

Carter suffered multiple fractures around his cheek bones and eyes, requiring reconstructive surgey as well as brain surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, and has 15 staples in his head.

The young man charged with being the leader of this band of punks is a 19-year-old black male named Tyheem Jaqui Henrey, a high school dropout who is unemployed. His accomplices were seven other black boys between the ages of 13 and 16. Their victim was an 18-year old white boys who was apparently walking alone.

Yes! I’m going to say it! When are black people going to get into the game and help us address the violence that their chidlren are exacting on the rest of society! Why aren’t black people at least showing us that they even care about the outrageous numbers we find involving black-on-white crime?

According to a 2005 updated version of the “Color of Crime” report, “when blacks commit violence they attack whites 50 to 55 percent of the time.” On the other hand, when whites commit violent crime, “they attack blacks only two to three percent of the time.”

In contrast to what we typically hear in support of “hate crimes” legislation, black-on-white crime is much more prevalent than white-on-black crime and is even higher than black-on-black crime.

As Larry Elder, prominent black commentator, syndicated columnist and best-selling author quotes Mychal Massie, black Op-ed columnist for World Net Daily, “many blacks unfairly blame whites for the problems in their lives and in their communities, an ingrained conditioning that starts when they are very young… many black people have a raw, visceral contempt for whites, and they are much more vocal than what I hear or experience from whites.”

As Elder himself adds, “blacks are often more racist than whites, and far less likely to be held accountable for racist remarks.”

According to the Color of Crime report, of the approximately 1,700,000 interracial crimes studied involving blacks and whites, about 90 percent were committed by blacks against whites. It notes that, “of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.” It concludes that “blacks are 250 times more likely to do criminal violence to whites that the reverse.”

Another horrifying statistic in the report shows that “fewer than 20 percent of black attacks on whites are robberies” and that most involve rape or assault. This strongly suggests that these attacks are not at all motivated by economic conditions, but by hate.

As the very popular black political analyst Juan Williams notes in his book “Enough,” federal data in 2004 showed that while blacks made up only 13 percent of the population in America, they accounted for “37 percent of the violent crimes, 54 percent of arrests for robbery, and 51 percent of murders.”

These numbers specfically outline for us why those counties in South Carolina (and nationwide) with higher numbers of blacks have higher crime rates.

We can say that there are some few brave black men at least beginning to bring light to the issue. Williams and Elder have been at the forefront. Warrren Bolton is another having written his very insighful Op-ed piece in The State nespaper (Columbia, SC). Bolton wrote that “the fact is that black people are committing crimes at a high rate in our community, irrrespective of the victims race.”

With the ever-growing statistics on black-on-white crime, shouldn’t we begin to examine what effect this may have on race relations?

As Williams notes, “fear of crime committed by black people inflames negative feelings about black people in the white community. Even worse, the growth of black crime forces black people to deny and excuse the corruption in their midst.”

As Jesse Jackson so succinctly put in 2003, “There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery and then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”

As I painstakingly detail in my book The Psychology of Management, members of any group are highly susceptible to group pressures. And the dynamics, culture, norms, and accepted behaviors of their group determine how individual members behave and what the individual finds acceptable.

I don’t think for a minute that black people are inherently more likely to commit crime than members of any other group. But as my latest book You’re Hysterical clearly explains, the accepted behaviors in much of black culture in America perpetuates, if not encourages, black youths to commit crime. To be more specific, the behaviors and cultural norms of many black adults today is the cause of crime among black youths today.

If we allow ourselves a disciplined, objective look at group violence, the statistical information readily available paints an embarrassing picture. Unfortunately, because we are so preoccupied with the idea that whites are inherently racist and non-whites are inevitably disenfranchised, even the most glaring statistics and information are often glossed over as irrelevant or somehow just untrue.

For me, the answer is clear. We are talking about human beings. We are talking about one group of human beings killing another group of human beings in grossly disproportionate numbers.

Of course, all blacks are not responsible for black-on-white crime any more than all whites are responsible for white-on-black crime. But the apparent blackout on black-on-white crime implies a grossly unethical view of hate and crime, and therefore undermines our current ideologies about hate crimes themselves.

To borrow the sentiment from the classic movie Mississippi Burning - I have no more love to give! I have only anger in my heart today, and I want you to be angry with me… I am sick and I am tired of hearing about white boys who have been beaten or killed by black boys!

It is way past time for white parents to demand that their children be allowed to enjoy a safe environment, in the schools and in the streets. And it’s time for black parents to stand with them!

Crimes per year between 2001 and 2003

Rapes 15,400 (Black-on-white) 900 (White-on-Black)

Robberies 139,000 (Black-on-white) 7,600 (White-on-black)

Assaults 489,000 (Black-on-white) 101,000 (White-on-black)

Sexual assaults 12,762 (Black-on-white) 3,217 (White-on-black)

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

  2. Having grown up on the streets in N. Jersey and having been a deputy sheriff, I concur with your stats on black on white crime. As you pointed out it is up to the Black community to take responsibility for their own. I would add my own take, the black community needs to stop playing not only the race card when they can’t face the reality of their own people acting outside the law but stop claiming victimization. That card will only play for so long, though considering Al Sharpton and guilt ridden whites I can easily be challenged on that assumption….WM
